“Embracing the world”. Conference on the first circumnavigation of the Globe

September 21, 2023 @ 18:00 - 20:30

Free

500th anniversary of the first circumnavigation of the Globe
The Magellan-Elcano expedition and the chronicle of Pietro Martire de Angera

(sposnored by Comune de Angera, in collaboration with Instituto Cervantes di Milano)

On September 8, 1522 the ship Victoria returned to Seville with 18 men on board, commanded by Juan Sebastián de Elcano. Three years earlier, on August 10, 1519, 247 men had departed in five ships, commanded by Ferdinand Magellan. Their mission: to reach the islands of spices (more precious than gold), the Moluccas or Maluco, and to demonstrate that they were within the area assigned to Castile by the Treaty of Tordesillas (1494), which divided the world between Castile and Portugal.

What happened? Did they achieve their goal? Find out in this interesting conference!

We will talk about how the trip was like, what happened to the rest of the crew and why they went to the West but returned from the East, thus completing the first circumnavigation of the globe, as we have learned, among others, from the official chronicler of Charles V, Pietro Martire di Angera. Join us to know how humanity first embraced the world!
